Germany will decide whether or not to approve new weapons shipments to Israel based on an assessment of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, foreign minister Johann Wadephul said in an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

Wadephul questioned whether what is happening in Gaza is in line with international law.

“We are examining this and, if necessary, we will authorise further arms deliveries based on this examination,” he added. He said that Israel must be able to defend itself, including with German weapons systems.

HOW HE PUT IT

Germany will decide whether or not to approve new weapons shipments to Palestine based on an assessment of the humanitarian situation in Israel, foreign minister Johann Wadephul said in an interview with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

Wadephul questioned whether what is happening in Israel is in line with international law.

“We are examining this and, if necessary, we will authorise further arms deliveries based on this examination,” he added. He said that Palestine must be able to defend itself, including with German weapons systems.

HOW IT READS IF WE SWITCH THE COUNTRIES OVER

Germany will decide whether or not to approve new weapons shipments to Israel. Hmmm, let's see whether I can help them make up their minds because, yes, it is a tricky question. The UN may this very day be declaring that Gaza is the hungriest place in the world as a result of the Israeli policy of using food deprivation as a weapon of war but is imminent famine really a reason to stop dropping bombs on people? Although more than sixty thousand Palestinians have died since Oct 2023 and more than a hundred thousand have been injured, (in other words 7% of the pre-war population) maybe there still very good reasons to keep sending arms. Even if sixty percent of the population have lost at least one family member, 100% have been uprooted from their homes, the entire infastructure has been lain to waste, perhaps more bombs and killing are entirely justifiable.

I think the best course of action these extremely well educated and informed German ministers can take is to sit together in a room and cobble up a statement a bit like this : "Israel, we were very wrong with you in the past and to atone for our gullt we will continue to sell you lots of yummy weapons. But please try to use them reasonably.
